Saving the Forest Means Saving More Than Trees
Indonesia's forest-fire response therefore needs to go beyond extinguishing flames.
Fire prevention, stronger protection of forests and peatlands, rapid wildlife rescue, habitat restoration and long-term monitoring of endangered species all need to be part of the response.
Local communities also play an important role. In several recent cases, wildlife was discovered because residents reported animals in distress to authorities and conservation organizations.
Sempurna's death is a painful reminder of what is at stake.
He was only one orangutan.
But he represents a much larger group of animals that cannot speak, evacuate themselves or ask for help when their forest disappears.
When Indonesia's forests burn, it is not only trees that disappear.
Homes disappear. Food disappears. Entire ecosystems are disrupted. And for some animals, the smoke may become their last breath.
The real cost of a forest fire may therefore continue to be paid long after the flames are gone.
